The Freefly LR1 Thermal Upgrade transforms the LR1 Payload into a dual-purpose imaging system, adding radiometric longwave infrared (LWIR) thermal capability to the Astro and Astro Max platforms. Built around the FLIR Boson 640R sensor, this add-on module provides 640 × 512 resolution thermal imagery with geotagging, spot metering, and temperature data capture for industrial, inspection, and public safety missions.
Designed for seamless compatibility with the Freefly LR1 Payload, this user-installable module mounts directly using four camera screws and three counterweight screws, plugging into the LR1 expansion port for power and data. Once installed, operators can switch between the LR1's RGB camera and the thermal view via Astro's live video feed. The 13.6 mm (63 mm full-frame equivalent) lens provides accurate field coverage for aerial thermography, while the 92 g installed weight preserves optimal flight balance.
The FLIR Boson 640R delivers radiometric imaging that allows operators to measure temperature variation across any surface in frame. Each image is geotagged for seamless integration with mapping software, enabling thermal overlays and analytics. When combined with the optional LR1 Laser Range Finder Upgrade, users can achieve precise distance and temperature correlation within the same payload setup, expanding the Astro's mission capability into powerline, infrastructure, and environmental monitoring.
